What are veggie bags?
Veggie bags are similar to a CSA, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture. I like veggie bags better because you know what you're going to get: veggies in a bag. With a CSA program, farmers are guaranteed the sale of their crop and their members enjoy a steady supply of freshly harvested, local, sustainably grown food. I would love if people would sign up in winter time, as I than know what my season will look like and what kind of income I can be expecting. With market gardening you never know what your season will look like, hence you don't know whether you're going to float or sink. I offer 10 big bags of veggies and 10 small bags of veggies.
What is included?
I grow around 15 different kinds of vegetables and 2 kinds of fruit (strawberries and ground cherries). Every week there is a variety of fresh and delicious veggies in the bags. What's included in the bag is all dependent on the weather. In 2019 gardening was tough with cutworms, flea beetles, late frost, drought, and than too much water. I planted 100 feet of cabbage and ended up with 0 cabbages. There was still tons of veggies that season, just not as much variety as I like. Some veggies I grow are: garlic, sweet corn, sweet bell peppers, onions, 37 varieties of tomatoes, and 7 varieties of potatoes.
What is the cost?
It is a 10 week season and might extend 2 weeks in spring and 2 weeks in fall. It all depends on what the weather does. A large bag is $20 per week. A small veggie bag costs $10 per week. Payment can be via: cash, cheque, credit card, or e transfer. If I do have an extra 4 weeks I will let you know and a big bag is $20 and a small bag is $10 per week.
Where is pick up?
Wednesday in Winnipeg (in the Lord Roberts neighbor hood, exact location to be determined) from 4-7 pm and Thursday 11 am-2 pm and 7-8 pm. Picking up at my garden allows you to swap out veggies you don't want. I'll have a swap box set out and if you don't like a veggie you can swap it for something you like.
There are no refunds. If you need to miss a week consider having a friend or family member pick up your bag or consider donating it to a food bank.
